OUTDOOR FIRST AID
This course is suitable for people who spend time in remote areas and in the outdoors. People who lead walking/hiking groups, go mountain biking, skiing or snowboarding who would like to gain skills and confidence in treating outdoor injuries

1: Emergency First Aid in an outdoor environment (Element)
Understand the role and responsibility of a first aider in an Outdoor Environment.
- Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider in an outdoor environment.
- Describe how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others.
- Identify the need for establishing consent to provide first aid.
- Describe how to complete an accident report form.
- Identify the first aid equipment that should be available in the workplace.
- Describe the safe use of first aid equipment.
Be able to assess an incident in an outdoor environment.
- Describe how to conduct a scene survey
- Identify when and how to call for help.
- Describe how to protect a casualty from environmental factors.
Be able to manage a casualty who is unresponsive and NOT breathing normally.
- Describe how to conduct a primary survey of a casualty.
- Demonstrate how to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an Adult using a manikin.
Outline modifications of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation in relation to:
- An Infant/Child
- Drowning
- Avalanche
- Lightning strike
- Remote from immediate help
- Demonstrate the action you would take if an unresponsive casualty started to vomit.
- Demonstrate how to switch on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and where to place the pads.
- Identify when and how to call for help.
- Identify when to stop Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive and breathing normally casualty.
- Demonstrate how to turn a casualty from face down to face up.
- Demonstrate how to conduct a Secondary Survey.
- Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position.
- Describe the treatment for a casualty who has fainted.
Be able to manage a casualty who is in seizure.
- Identify the signs of an Absence seizure and a Tonic-Clonic seizure.
- Describe how to treat a casualty who is experiencing an Absence seizure and a Tonic-Clonic seizure.
Recognise and assist an Adult, Infant or Child who is choking.
- Describe how to identify an Adult, Infant or Child with a partially blocked and completely blocked airway
- Administer first aid to an Adult, Infant or Child who is choking using a manikin.
- Describe the procedure to be followed after administering the treatment for a completely blocked airway.
Manage a casualty with external bleeding.
- Identify the types of external bleeding.
- Describe how to control severe external bleeding.
Manage a casualty who is in shock.
- Describe the signs and symptoms of shock.
- Identify how to manage a casualty who is in shock.
Understand how to manage a casualty with a minor injury.
- Describe how to manage a casualty with small cuts, grazes, bruises and nose bleeds.
Know how to provide first aid to a casualty affected by immersion in water.
- Outline how to administer first aid to a casualty who has been immersed in water.
